Good fabrics last for years when they’re cared for properly. Always follow the care label first — these general tips will help with the rest.
Lawn and cotton
- Wash in cool water with a mild detergent; wash dark and bright colours separately the first few times.
- Turn printed pieces inside out and dry them in the shade so colours don’t fade.
- Iron while slightly damp on a medium setting.
Chiffon
- Hand-wash gently in cold water or dry-clean embellished pieces.
- Don’t wring — press the water out in a towel, then hang to dry.
- Iron on low heat with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric.
Organza, silk and tussar
- Dry-cleaning is safest, especially for embroidered or heavily worked outfits.
- Steam rather than iron to remove creases without flattening embroidery.
- Store on padded hangers or folded with tissue paper, away from direct sunlight.
Knitwear, tees and polos
- Wash knits inside out on a gentle cycle and dry flat so they keep their shape.
- Graphic tees last longer if you wash them inside out and avoid ironing directly on the print.
Storage tips
Keep formal outfits in breathable cotton garment bags rather than plastic, and add a sachet of cloves or neem leaves to keep insects away.
